Historic Inter-Country Adoption in Majuli District
First Inter-Country Adoption in Majuli
JORHAT, Jan 5: In a landmark event for Majuli district, a couple from the United States has adopted two siblings from the river island, marking the first inter-country adoption in the area.
Rimpi Borah, the coordinator of the Specialized Adoption Agency in Majuli, shared details on Sunday about the adoption ceremony that took place on Saturday. The two boys, aged 8 and 7, had been living at the Specialized Adoption Agency Centre and were officially placed in the care of their new parents, who are of Indian descent, during a formal event held at the Majuli District Commissioner's office.
During the ceremony, Majuli District Commissioner Ratul Chandra Pathak handed over the children to the couple, with various officials from the district administration, police, and members of the District Child Protection Officer and Child Welfare Committee in attendance.
A representative from the Authorized Foreign Adoption Agency (AFAA), recognized by CARA for facilitating international adoptions, was also present at the event.
Borah noted that the boys had been at the centre since its inception in 2024, which is operated by an NGO named Surjudaya. The State Government has recently begun the process of taking over the centre.
She explained that the adoption process adhered to the established protocols, requiring interested parties to apply through the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) portal, which is managed by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development. Following CARA's approval, the request is forwarded to the State Adoption Resource Agency (SARA), where the necessary procedures are observed before granting the adoption.
