Historic Graduation of First Female Cadets from National Defence Academy
Milestone Graduation Ceremony
On Wednesday, India celebrated a significant milestone as the inaugural group of 17 female cadets graduated from the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune, alongside more than 300 male cadets. This event marks the first co-educational graduation at the NDA, symbolizing a progressive step towards inclusivity within the armed forces.
The cadets proudly marched past the 'Antim Pag' (Final Step) at the Khetrpal Parade Ground, a renowned venue within the tri-service training academy at Khadakwasla, often dubbed the 'cradle of leadership' for its pivotal role in nurturing future military leaders.
Cadet captain Udayveer Negi led the parade for the 148th course. General V. K. Singh remarked, 'Today is a uniquely significant day in the academy's history as we witness the graduation of the first female cadets from the NDA. This event signifies a historic milestone in our journey towards inclusivity and empowerment.' He expressed optimism that one of these young women could soon ascend to the highest ranks within their respective services.
Background of Female Cadets at NDA
First Female Batch In 2022
The Passing Out Parade was reviewed by former Army Chief General V. K. Singh, who is also the current Governor of Mizoram. The first cohort of female cadets was admitted to the NDA in 2022, following a Supreme Court ruling in 2021 that allowed women to apply. Subsequently, the UPSC opened applications for female candidates to join the academy.
To commemorate this transformative moment in military education, General V. K. Singh launched a special magazine titled Breaking Barriers: Female Cadets during the event. This publication highlights the experiences, challenges, and achievements of the first group of women cadets at the National Defence Academy.
