Hindu Law Student Abducted and Assaulted in Dhaka: A Disturbing Incident
Incident Overview
Dhaka: A troubling case of violence against minorities has emerged from Bangladesh, involving a Hindu law student who also serves as a temple priest. The individual, identified as Subhash Deuri, 25, was reportedly abducted by unknown assailants, stripped, and assaulted for ransom, according to local media reports. This incident occurred late Monday night, as reported by the Bdnews24 media portal.
Details surrounding the motive for the attack remain unclear, particularly whether it was driven by religious bias. Deuri was discovered unconscious on the streets of Old Dhaka by friends in the early hours of Tuesday and subsequently transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Mohammad Faruk, the police outpost chief at DMCH, confirmed that Deuri was admitted in critical condition around 7 am local time and is currently receiving medical care. As of now, no formal police report has been filed regarding the incident.
Kajal Debnath, spokesperson for the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, stated, "We are aware of the situation and are working to gather more information to determine if this was merely a robbery." Deuri hails from the Magura district in Khulna, located approximately 170 kilometers west of Dhaka, and resides in a rented apartment with a friend in the capital.
According to his roommate, Durjoy Saha, Deuri left their apartment around 11:30 pm on Monday for an errand. Saha recounted receiving a call from Deuri's phone, during which an unidentified person requested money. Unable to assist due to a lack of funds, Saha was further alarmed when the abductors also reached out to Deuri's family.
Deuri's sister, Jaya, revealed that she received a call around 1 am on Tuesday from her brother's phone, where a stranger demanded 30,000 Bangladeshi Taka. After transferring 26,000 Taka to the account provided by the caller, Deuri was subsequently abandoned on the street.
Saha noted that Deuri managed to convey to him that he had endured both physical and psychological torment at the hands of his captors, who stripped him and coerced him into soliciting money from his family. A friend who accompanied Deuri to the hospital mentioned that his mobile phone and wallet were missing.
