In a significant development for both pilgrims and tourists, the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) has reinstated its direct bus service from Chandigarh to Shikari Mata after nearly a year of suspension. This service had been halted due to the disaster that occurred in 2025, and its return will facilitate easier access to the esteemed Shikari Mata Temple, perched at an elevation of approximately 11,000 feet in the Mandi district.
The bus, managed by the Sundernagar depot, departs daily at 5:00 a.m., making its way through Mandi, Baggi, Chail Chowk, Thunag, and Janjehli, arriving at Shikari Mata around 10:30 a.m. After a three-hour stop, it sets off back at 1:15 p.m., reaching Chandigarh later in the evening.
With this service back in operation, residents from Sundernagar, Balh, Nachan, and Seraj constituencies will benefit from direct access to Chandigarh, eliminating the need for multiple bus transfers that were previously necessary.
This route is anticipated to gain popularity during the summer months, as Shikari Mata draws numerous devotees, nature enthusiasts, and adventure seekers. HRTC has set the round-trip fare from Chandigarh to Shikari Mata at ₹1,175, while travelers from Sundernagar can complete their journey for ₹520. This service is expected to significantly lower travel expenses compared to private taxi hires.
Additionally, this route is one of the highest revenue-generating services for the Sundernagar depot, reportedly earning between ₹8–10 lakh monthly and around ₹80 lakh annually. During the winter season, when heavy snowfall obstructs access to Shikari Mata, the service only operates up to Janjehli.
Kashmiri Lal, the Bus Stand In-charge at Sundernagar Depot, noted that the service had been inactive since the 2025 disaster but has now been reinstated to benefit both pilgrims and tourists. He expressed optimism that the revival of this service would enhance religious tourism and improve transportation options for the local populace.
