Himachal Pradesh Women Can Now Report Domestic Violence via WhatsApp

In a groundbreaking initiative, women in Himachal Pradesh can now report domestic violence and abuse through WhatsApp, making it easier to seek justice. The State Women Commission has launched a dedicated number for this purpose, aiming to support women, especially in remote areas. With a significant number of cases already resolved, the commission hopes this new method will encourage more women to come forward without fear. This move represents a vital step towards improving the accessibility of support systems for women across the state.

New Initiative for Reporting Domestic Violence

Shimla
Women in Himachal Pradesh experiencing domestic violence and other forms of abuse now have the option to report their issues through WhatsApp, enhancing their access to justice. The State Women Commission has introduced a specific WhatsApp number — 9459886600 — enabling women to communicate their grievances directly with the commission.

During an announcement in Kullu, Vidya Negi, chairperson of the State Women Commission, noted that in the last four months, approximately 50 women had contacted the commission via phone to share their experiences and seek justice. To improve outreach and provide timely assistance, the commission has now added WhatsApp as a reporting tool.

Women can now send their complaints directly to the WhatsApp number, which removes the necessity of visiting offices or submitting written petitions initially. This initiative is particularly beneficial for women in remote and rural areas who may struggle to approach authorities in person.

Significant Progress in Case Resolution

Vidya Negi disclosed that nearly 1,600 cases had been pending with the Women Commission since the previous BJP administration and the current government. Over the past four months, the commission has conducted courts in various regions of the state, successfully resolving around 650 cases.

“The commission is committed to addressing all pending matters promptly to ensure that women awaiting justice receive timely relief,” she stated.

Diverse Complaints Addressed

The State Women Commission handles a wide array of complaints, including those related to domestic violence, acid attacks, rape, molestation, murder and attempted murder, stalking, honour killings, dowry harassment, and dowry deaths. They also address marital disputes, workplace sexual harassment, service-related issues, and employment discrimination.

Furthermore, women can report cybercrime, online harassment, forced prostitution, human trafficking, and other crimes against women through the commission.

With the launch of WhatsApp-based reporting, the commission hopes that more women will come forward to seek assistance without fear, marking a significant step towards creating a more accessible and responsive support system for women throughout Himachal Pradesh, according to Vidya Negi.
