Teachers' Association Protests Recruitment Bill

In Shimla and Dharamshala, the Himachal Pradesh University Teachers’ Welfare Association (HPUTWA) has intensified its peaceful demonstrations against the proposed teacher recruitment legislation at the university campus. The association is dedicated to upholding the principles of academic and institutional independence, the dignity of educators, and the fundamental values of higher education.

HPUTWA has announced plans for a delegation to meet with the Governor to formally express the teaching community's concerns and objections regarding the new recruitment framework. The association stressed that maintaining the autonomy of universities is crucial for ensuring high academic standards and fostering an independent intellectual atmosphere.

Professors and faculty members from HPU, along with educators from various departments including UILS, UIT, UCBS, PG Centre, CDOE, and the Evening Centre, actively joined the protest. They voiced their support for HPUTWA’s objectives, emphasizing that the matter transcends recruitment processes and touches on academic freedom, administrative independence, educational quality, and professional respect.

HPUTWA President Prof. Nitin Vyas emphasized that the recruitment of teachers is a critical aspect of academic governance that should honor subject expertise and scholarly credentials. Dr. Ashok Bansal pointed out the necessity of balancing transparency and accountability with institutional autonomy, while Dr. Sanjay Sharma highlighted that universities should be seen as hubs of knowledge, research, and innovation rather than mere administrative entities.

The protest also gained traction in Dharamshala, where faculty at the Regional Centre echoed similar sentiments, advocating for the preservation of academic and institutional independence. HPUTWA noted that the involvement of various centers and institutions is strengthening the movement.

The association clarified that their protest is not aimed at any individual or political party but is a unified effort to protect academic freedom, the dignity of teachers, and the autonomous identity of Himachal Pradesh University. HPUTWA affirmed that their peaceful and democratic protests will persist until the concerns of the teaching community are adequately addressed.
