Teachers Continue Protests for University Autonomy


Teachers emphasize the need for autonomy, academic freedom, and institutional integrity

The Himachal Pradesh University Teachers’ Welfare Association (HPUTWA) has been actively pursuing its ‘Save University Campaign’ for the 21st consecutive day, conducting a peaceful sit-in outside the Vice-Chancellor’s office. This demonstration aims to advocate for the preservation of the university’s autonomy, academic freedom, institutional integrity, and the reinstatement of the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS).

During the protest, several speakers addressed the crowd, including Dr. Naresh (Hindi), Dr. Seema (Women’s Studies), Dr. Priyanka Vaidya (English), Prof. Chandramohan (ITHM), and Dr. Manohar (Physical Education).



  • Dr. Naresh (Hindi): Asserted that the university serves as more than just an administrative entity; it is a crucial hub for the unfettered development of knowledge, language, literature, and ideas. He called on educators to unite in the defense of academic freedom and dignity.


  • Dr. Seema (Women’s Studies): Highlighted that autonomy is not solely about administrative choices but also encompasses inclusivity and equal opportunities. She advocated for participatory decision-making and a more democratic academic atmosphere.


  • Dr. Priyanka Vaidya (English): Stressed the direct correlation between academic freedom, professional advancement, and the quality of the institution. She urged for the restoration of CAS to guarantee transparent career progression for educators.


  • Prof. Chandramohan (ITHM): Reminded attendees of the university’s historical contributions to education, research, and human resource development, urging that future policies maintain institutional identity and democratic practices.


  • Dr. Manohar (Physical Education): Emphasized the significance of sports and physical education as essential components of academia, advocating for improved infrastructure and resources while reinforcing autonomy.



HPUTWA reiterated that while accountability and transparency are vital, they should not compromise autonomy and academic freedom. The association called upon teachers, staff, researchers, and students to stand together in protecting the university’s independence and dignity.
