The educational landscape in Himachal Pradesh is under scrutiny as numerous students in public schools are left without textbooks, even after the academic year commenced over a month ago.
Classes in schools that close for winter started on February 12, yet as of March 20, pupils from Class 6 to 9 are still awaiting crucial textbooks. This delay transcends mere logistics; it significantly hampers educational outcomes, placing both students and educators in a challenging predicament.
Textbook Shortages Across Various Grades
Several subjects are currently unavailable across different classes:
• Class 6: Local Culture, Yoga and Yog Education
• Class 7: Science, Social Science (Civics), Geography
• Class 8: English, Mathematics, Science
• Class 9: Mathematics, Science
The absence of fundamental subjects like Mathematics and Science prevents students from engaging in a structured learning process, potentially creating gaps that could hinder their entire academic year.
Official Directives Ignored
The education department had issued explicit guidelines in early February, stressing that classes should commence promptly and that negligence would not be tolerated. Officials were also instructed to carry out surprise checks to ensure adherence.
Nevertheless, the reality on the ground reveals a stark contrast. Despite stringent orders, the timely distribution of textbooks has not materialized, highlighting a disconnect between policy and actual execution.
Given that the government and educational authorities have emphasized the necessity of timely academic initiation, what has caused such a significant delay in textbook availability?
Is this simply a case of administrative oversight, or does it reveal deeper systemic issues within the educational framework?
Until these questions are addressed and corrective measures are implemented, countless students in Himachal Pradesh will continue to face an unnecessary academic hurdle.
