Himachal Pradesh is witnessing a significant boost in its infrastructure as long-awaited railway expansion initiatives are finally gaining traction. Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan has expressed his appreciation to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for placing the hill state on the priority list for railway development.
Mahajan referred to this advancement as a “historic” moment, noting that the Railway Minister's announcements in the Rajya Sabha indicate a strategic shift in policy, with Himachal Pradesh now receiving dedicated focus in national rail expansion efforts. He pointed out the swift progress on the Chandigarh–Baddi rail line and the Bhanupalli–Bilaspur–Beri rail corridor, which are essential for unlocking the state's economic capabilities.
Additionally, Mahajan highlighted the Bilaspur–Manali–Leh railway line as a transformative project with significant strategic and economic benefits. This ambitious 489-kilometre railway line has completed its survey phase, and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared.
The proposed route will connect key areas such as Sundernagar, Mandi, Manali, Sissu, Darcha, Keylong, Sarchu, and Upshi, ultimately reaching Leh. Once operational, this corridor is anticipated to greatly improve connectivity in the Mandi district, establishing it as a crucial hub for tourism, trade, and logistics.

Economic Growth and Employment Opportunities
Boost to Tourism, Industry and Employment
Mahajan emphasized that the completion of these railway projects will stimulate growth in tourism, industry, and trade. Improved rail connectivity is expected to better integrate Himachal Pradesh with national markets, creating new job opportunities for local youth.
He described the Centre’s initiative as a “milestone intervention” aimed at fostering balanced and inclusive development in the state, expressing hope that railway expansion efforts will soon reach other underserved areas of Himachal Pradesh.
