BJP's Victory in Himachal Pradesh Municipal Elections
On Monday, Jairam Thakur, the leader of the opposition in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, expressed his satisfaction with the BJP's success in three out of four municipal elections, asserting that the public has decided to oust the Congress government from the state. According to the results announced on Sunday, the BJP secured victories in Dharamshala, Mandi, and Solan, while Congress managed to win the Palampur municipal seat. Voting for the municipal elections in Himachal Pradesh took place on May 17.
In Mandi, the BJP triumphed by winning 12 out of 14 wards, leaving Congress with just one ward. The party also dominated in Dharamshala, winning 11 out of 17 wards, while Congress claimed five, and an independent candidate took one. Given the significance of these results ahead of the 2027 assembly elections, Thakur accused the Congress government of delaying the urban local body elections under the Disaster Management Act, claiming they were aware that the outcomes would not favor them.
Thakur stated that the elections for the Panchayati Raj institutions and the upcoming municipal elections in November were intentionally postponed by the Chief Minister, who anticipated unfavorable results. Consequently, the Disaster Management Act was enforced in Himachal Pradesh. After appealing to the High Court, a ruling was made against the government, which subsequently escalated the matter to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court then mandated that elections for the Panchayati Raj institutions and municipal bodies must be completed by May 31.
The BJP leader remarked that the Chief Minister's assessment proved accurate, as he understood the results would be against him, which indeed occurred. The reality is that the people of Himachal Pradesh have already decided to remove Congress from power. If elections were held today, Congress would have no presence in Himachal Pradesh.
