Shimla: The Meteorological Department of Himachal Pradesh has issued an extended orange alert due to expected heavy to very heavy rainfall across several hill districts, effective until June 26. Areas including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Sirmaur, Shimla, Mandi, and Solan are particularly at risk for weather-related disruptions.

From June 20 to 25, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts frequent rain showers, with certain regions likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall on June 22 and 25. Concerns include secondary impacts such as landslides, waterlogging, road blockages, and decreased visibility.

Local authorities are on high alert, with technical teams conducting proactive inspections at locations prone to landslides, water crossings, and road foundations. Preparations for temporary road closures and alternative routes for heavy vehicles are underway. Disaster response forces (SDRF) have been activated, and relief shelters are on standby.

In places like Pandoh, waterlogging at schools has already disrupted morning classes. Social media is filled with messages from villagers advising caution. Educational institutions, including private coaching centers and schools, have been urged to reassess safety measures for students in light of the severe weather.

“Kangra recorded 87.8 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. These figures are not mere statistics—they signify lives at risk,” stated an official from the IMD.

State Secretaries have mandated daily weather updates, enhancing early warning systems. Local civic bodies and health services are prepared for potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases.

Residents are encouraged to delay non-essential travel, steer clear of water bodies, and report any visible cracks or soil slips near their residences. Farmers are taking precautions to protect their crops ahead of the anticipated rainfall, including preparing drainage systems and covering delicate saplings.

As the state braces for additional rain, the prolonged orange alert highlights the vulnerability of the Himalayan region and the importance of vigilance in protecting lives and critical infrastructure.
