Himachal Pradesh Government Takes Action Against Police Involved in Drug Trade

In a decisive action against drug trafficking, the Himachal Pradesh government has dismissed 11 police officers found involved in the illegal trade of chitta. Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related offenses, stating that no one is above the law. The government has also initiated measures to encourage public reporting of drug-related activities, offering substantial rewards for information leading to seizures. This crackdown reflects the administration's commitment to maintaining integrity within the police force and combating the drug menace in the state.
 

Government Dismisses Police Officers for Drug Trafficking

In a significant move against drug trafficking, the State Government has terminated the employment of 11 police officers linked to the illegal trade of chitta. This decision, executed under Article 311(2)(b) of the Indian Constitution, underscores the government's unwavering stance against drug-related offenses and its commitment to maintaining integrity within the police force.


During a high-level meeting in Shimla, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu emphasized the police's crucial role in combating drug suppliers. He stated that if law enforcement personnel are found participating in drug-related activities, strict measures will be enforced.


“No individual is above the law, and those involved in the illegal trade of chitta and other narcotics will face consequences, irrespective of their rank,” the Chief Minister declared, reinforcing that law violators have no place in the police department.

The following officers have been dismissed:

  • Constable Shubham Thakur, District Bilaspur

  • Constable Kapil, 3rd Indian Reserve Battalion, Pandoh

  • Constable Shiv Kumar, SDRF

  • Constable Lakshya Chauhan, Shimla District Police

  • Constable/Driver Vishal Thakur, SV & ACB

  • Constable Gaurav Verma, 4th Indian Reserve Battalion, Jungleberry

  • Constable/Driver Sandeep Rana, 2nd Indian Reserve Battalion, Sakoh

  • Constable Ankush Kumar, SDRF

  • Constable Rajat Chandel, State CID

  • Constable Rahul Verma, Shimla District Police


All individuals were implicated in cases filed under the NDPS Act.


Government Initiatives and Public Engagement

The Chief Minister has instructed all departments to compile comprehensive reports on employees involved in drug trafficking and submit them to the Chief Secretary. Additionally, investigations into properties acquired through drug-related finances have been mandated. The government has activated emergency number 112 for citizens to report information regarding chitta and has encouraged the public to come forward without fear.


Incentives for Reporting


To promote public involvement, the government has introduced attractive rewards for information leading to drug seizures:



  • ₹10,000 for recovery of up to 2 grams

  • ₹25,000 for 5 grams

  • ₹50,000 for 25 grams

  • ₹5 lakh for 1 kilogram

  • ₹10 lakh for seizures exceeding 1 kilogram


Informants providing leads on significant drug syndicates will receive rewards exceeding ₹5 lakh.


Meeting Overview

Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari shared insights on police actions against chitta during the meeting, which was attended by various senior officials, including Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh, Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta, and others.
