During a recent press briefing, Kewal Singh Pathania, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, outlined key initiatives by the state government. He emphasized that under Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's leadership, Himachal Pradesh is committed to protecting its rights, enhancing financial resources, and fostering development.

Pathania referred to the Kishau Dam agreement as a “historic and decisive move,” indicating that it will yield significant economic advantages for the state. According to the terms, Himachal Pradesh will obtain 211 MW of power from the dam without incurring the substantial production costs, which will be borne by the states utilizing the water. Initial estimates suggested an annual revenue of ₹600 crore, but revised calculations indicate that the state could potentially earn close to ₹1,200 crore annually upon project completion.

On the topic of Wildflower Hall, Pathania disclosed that the hotel had been leased for a mere ₹1 over 23 years. With the lease now terminated, the state has reclaimed ownership, generating ₹450 crore in revenue and ensuring an annual income of approximately ₹20 crore. He described this as a vital measure for safeguarding state resources and bolstering the economy for the benefit of 7.5 million residents of Himachal Pradesh.

Pathania also discussed outstanding payments from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), mentioning that efforts are in progress to recover ₹7,200 crore owed to the state. He expressed hope for favorable outcomes in this matter.

Regarding the Shanan and Bairasul projects, he pointed out that their 40-year lease period has lapsed, necessitating decisions to restore Himachal’s rights. He advocated for the transfer of the Shanan project to the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board and underscored the historical significance of Bairasul as one of India’s pioneering hydroelectric projects.

Pathania criticized the cessation of the revenue deficit grant of ₹8,000–10,000 crore from the Finance Commission since 1952, but reassured that the state government is diligently working to address financial hurdles and strive for self-sufficiency.

He also raised alarms about environmental degradation linked to the Chamera hydro projects, asserting that Chamba district deserves equitable benefits and prioritization in development. He reiterated the importance of environmental conservation and fair resource allocation.

On transportation, he commended the Chief Minister’s initiative to introduce 1,000 electric buses, despite geographical challenges, stating that this move will enhance revenue for the Himachal Road Transport Corporation while promoting sustainable mobility.

In conclusion, Pathania stated that all strategic and forward-thinking actions taken by the government are focused on safeguarding state rights, strengthening finances, promoting environmental sustainability, and steering Himachal Pradesh towards self-reliance.

The press conference was attended by Sadar MLA Neeraj Nayyar, District Congress Committee President Surjeet Bharmauri, State Haj Committee Chairman Dildar Ali Batt, and Block Congress Committee President Om Prakash.
