Himachal Pradesh Faces Severe Disruptions Due to Monsoon: Adventure Activities Halted

Monsoon Devastation in Himachal Pradesh

Shimla: The relentless monsoon in Himachal Pradesh continues to wreak havoc. As of the morning of July 15, 2025, a total of 220 roads are blocked statewide, with Mandi district bearing the brunt, accounting for 160 of these closures. The ongoing disruptions have also rendered 67 power transformers and 153 water supply systems inoperative, significantly impacting daily life.


Mandi district is particularly hard-hit, with 133 water supply projects affected. The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has predicted ongoing rainfall across various regions until July 21, issuing a yellow alert for possible heavy showers in isolated areas.


Suspension of Adventure Tourism Activities

The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department has announced a two-month suspension of all adventure tourism activities, including paragliding, river rafting, and water sports, effective from July 15 to September 15. This decision, prompted by safety concerns, formalizes a state-wide halt that had already begun due to local disasters.


Since June 20, a series of natural calamities, including cloudbursts, landslides, and flash floods, have resulted in the loss of 105 lives, with 184 individuals injured and 35 still unaccounted for. Additionally, road accidents during this period have claimed 44 more lives.


Widespread Damage and Economic Impact

The destruction of infrastructure has been extensive, with approximately 1,235 houses and shops suffering partial or complete damage. Furthermore, 798 cow sheds have been destroyed, along with the loss of 953 domestic animals and 21,500 poultry birds. The estimated financial impact of these disasters has reached ₹786.67 crore.
