Statewide Tributes to a Political Icon


On Tuesday, Himachal Pradesh honored the legacy of former six-time Chief Minister Raja Virbhadra Singh, celebrating his 93rd birth anniversary with various commemorative events throughout the state.


The primary tribute took place at the Ridge in Shimla, where Governor Kavinder Gupta, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, and Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh laid floral offerings at the statue of the late leader. The Chief Minister was joined by senior Cabinet members and other dignitaries during this significant ceremony.


In his address, Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized Raja Virbhadra Singh’s substantial contributions to the state's development, public welfare, and the enhancement of democratic values, stating that his legacy would always be cherished. He referred to the former Chief Minister as a prominent statesman whose vision and leadership were pivotal in shaping contemporary Himachal Pradesh.


Governor Kavinder Gupta also paid tribute to Raja Virbhadra Singh’s long-standing commitment to the state's progress, calling him a visionary leader who transcended caste, regional, and political barriers to promote balanced development across Himachal Pradesh. He highlighted that the former Chief Minister's six terms in office reflected the deep trust and affection the people had for him.


Various commemorative activities were organized in multiple districts, showcasing the enduring respect for Raja Virbhadra Singh even years after his passing. Initiatives included blood donation camps, free health check-ups, and fruit distribution drives, with Congress workers and the public honoring the veteran leader.


In Koksar Panchayat, Lahaul-Spiti, the Raja Virbhadra Singh Foundation, in partnership with the local panchayat, initiated a plantation drive to celebrate his dedication to environmental conservation. The event commenced with floral tributes, followed by the planting of saplings and recognition of local elected officials for their contributions to community development. Foundation representatives indicated plans to extend similar environmental efforts to other panchayats in the district.


In Mandi, the District Congress Committee held a commemorative event at Gandhi Bhawan, where party leaders and members reflected on Raja Virbhadra Singh's role as the architect of modern Himachal Pradesh. Speakers acknowledged his significant contributions to infrastructure, education, healthcare, horticulture, and rural development, emphasizing his foundational role in the state's socio-economic advancement. Later, party leaders visited the Zonal Hospital to distribute fruits to patients in honor of the birth anniversary.


Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh shared a heartfelt message on social media, describing his father as a guiding influence whose principles of truth, service, and dedication continue to motivate him. He reiterated his commitment to advancing Raja Virbhadra Singh’s vision of inclusive and balanced development, noting that blood donation camps, free medical check-ups, and fruit distribution programs were being organized statewide in his memory.


Raja Virbhadra Singh is widely recognized as one of the most significant political figures in Himachal Pradesh, having dedicated over sixty years to public service.
