The Budget Session of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly turned tumultuous on Friday as a fierce clash erupted between the ruling Congress party and the BJP regarding the escalating drug issue and alleged police involvement. The confrontation escalated into loud protests, culminating in a walkout by BJP legislators, led by Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jairam Thakur.
BJP Protests Over Drug Issues
The uproar commenced during Zero Hour when BJP representatives voiced their concerns about the growing narcotics problem in the state, especially in rural regions. They accused police officials of being complicit in the drug trade and demanded accountability from the government. Frustrated with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's response, BJP MLAs protested within the assembly before exiting in protest.
Jairam Thakur's Strong Critique
Speaking to the media afterward, Jairam Thakur launched a fierce critique of the government, claiming it was protecting drug cartels and neglecting public safety. He stated, "It is deeply regrettable and disgraceful that those meant to combat drug trafficking are themselves engaged in such activities. When protectors become predators, who will safeguard our youth?"
Thakur also pointed out that four members of the Special Task Force (STF), established to combat drug trafficking, were recently apprehended for allegedly smuggling dangerous substances like LSD, raising serious doubts about the integrity of law enforcement.
Accusations of Government Indifference
Thakur accused the state leadership of being indifferent to the severity of the drug crisis. He noted that while he was addressing the issue in the Assembly, the Chief Minister and senior officials seemed dismissive.
He criticized the Sukhu administration for its focus on "event management and publicity" during its three-and-a-half-year term, claiming that drug abuse had infiltrated rural Himachal. "Making school children stand for hours in the sun for cultural events will not curb drug abuse. Our youth are succumbing to overdoses while the government is preoccupied with photo ops," he remarked.
He contrasted this with the previous BJP administration, asserting that stringent border controls had significantly reduced trafficking during his time in office.
Allegations of Surveillance and Misuse of Police
In a significant escalation, Jairam Thakur accused the government of misusing police resources for surveillance and phone tapping of opposition leaders. He claimed, "Instead of targeting drug networks, police are being utilized to monitor opposition MLAs. Their activities are being tracked and reported to the higher-ups."
He further alleged that similar tactics were employed during the Rajya Sabha elections, asserting that phone tapping requires approval from the Home Department, which was allegedly being circumvented.
Warning of a Dual Crisis
In conclusion, Jairam Thakur warned that Himachal Pradesh is grappling with a dual crisis under the current government—economic hardship and social decline due to rampant drug use. He stated, "On one side, the state is heading towards financial instability, and on the other, our youth—the backbone of society—are being ravaged by drugs."
He cautioned that if the government does not take decisive measures against the drug mafia and alleged misuse of administrative power, the BJP would escalate its protests and initiate a statewide movement.
