Himachal Minister Deflects Questions on Vimal Negi Case to CBI

In a recent statement, Himachal Pradesh Minister Jagat Negi addressed questions regarding the investigation into Chief Engineer Vimal Negi's death, urging that inquiries be directed to the CBI. He criticized the BJP for pushing for a CBI probe, claiming it was an attempt to undermine the state's government. Negi detailed the swift actions taken by the state, including suspensions and the formation of a special investigation team. He also clarified the reinstatement of officers, emphasizing that it was done under legal obligations and did not involve promotions. The minister's comments raise questions about the ongoing investigation and the accountability of the CBI.

Minister's Response to Inquiry

In response to inquiries regarding the death of Chief Engineer Vimal Negi, senior Congress leader and Himachal Pradesh Minister Jagat Negi stated, “Why are you directing this question to me? It should be addressed to the CBI, as they are currently overseeing the investigation.”

Allegations Against BJP

Jagat Singh accused the BJP of intentionally pushing for a CBI investigation to tarnish the image of the well-performing Himachal government. He asserted that the state administration acted promptly and responsibly when the issue first emerged.

Government Actions Detailed

Elaborating on the state's actions, Jagat Negi mentioned that all officials initially suspected of involvement were suspended immediately. Subsequently, a special investigation team (SIT) was formed, followed by the establishment of a high-powered committee to ensure a transparent and thorough inquiry.

CBI's Role Questioned

“Despite these measures, the BJP insisted on a CBI investigation. Now that the CBI is in charge, the public should inquire about their progress,” he remarked. “Why haven’t they contacted the officers under suspicion? What about the circumstances that led Vimal Negi to take such drastic action?”

Clarification on Officer Reinstatement

In response to concerns regarding the reinstatement of suspended officers, Jagat Negi explained that suspensions cannot be prolonged indefinitely due to constitutional protections for government officials. “We were legally obligated to reinstate the officers after a specific duration,” he stated. “However, let me clarify — none of them received promotions. In fact, it was a demotion. The officer who previously held the Managing Director position was reassigned as Secretary, and the one who was Director is now serving as Chief Engineer.”

Reinstatement Under Legal Constraints

Jagat Negi emphasized that the reinstated officers were not rewarded in any way and returned solely due to procedural requirements.
