High Voter Turnout in Mizoram's Lai Autonomous District Council Elections

The Lai Autonomous District Council elections in Mizoram saw a remarkable voter turnout of 80.21%, with over 45,000 ballots cast. Despite a peaceful voting process, a polling official tragically passed away, suspected to be from a heart attack. The elections featured 80 candidates, including those from major parties like the Zoram People's Movement and the Mizo National Front. The counting of votes is set for December 9, with the current council's term ending soon. Overview of the Elections


Aizawl, Dec 4: In the recent Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) elections held in Mizoram, approximately 80.21% of over 56,000 registered voters participated, according to a senior election official.


Tragically, a polling official passed away, reportedly from a heart attack.


Mizoram's State Election Commissioner, H Lalthlangliana, confirmed that the voting process took place smoothly from 7 AM to 4 PM.


He noted that there were no incidents of violence reported across the 111 polling stations during the nine-hour voting period.


Out of 56,873 eligible voters, 45,617 cast their ballots in the council elections.


Lalthlangliana expressed his condolences regarding the death of the polling official.


Israel MS Dawngliana, aged 43, from Lawngtlai’s Council Veng, was found deceased in his room at the Lungtian-II polling station on Wednesday morning. While the precise cause of death is still under investigation, it is believed to be a heart attack.


A total of 80 candidates, including 11 Independents, contested in the elections.


The ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) nominated candidates for all 25 seats, while the main opposition party, the Mizo National Front (MNF), fielded candidates in 20 constituencies. The Congress and BJP nominated candidates in 14 and 10 constituencies, respectively.


Vote counting is scheduled for December 9.


In the previous LADC elections on December 4, 2020, the MNF, which was then the ruling party, secured 20 out of 25 seats, with the BJP and Congress winning one seat each, and three Independents also being elected.


The current council's term is set to conclude on December 18. Established in 1972 under the Sixth Schedule, the LADC serves the Lai tribal community and consists of 25 elected and four nominated members.
