Heroic Principal Prevents School Shooting in Oklahoma
Principal's Brave Intervention
A high school principal in Oklahoma is being celebrated for his courageous actions that thwarted a potential school shooting. This incident unfolded on April 7 at Pauls Valley High School, located approximately 60 miles south of Oklahoma City. Surveillance footage captured the intense moments that occurred in the school's lobby.
The Armed Former Student

The assailant, identified as 20-year-old Victor Lee Hawkins, had graduated from the school just a year prior. According to court documents, he took two semi-automatic handguns from his father, drove to the school, and entered with the intention of executing a mass shooting. About 20 minutes before the attack, Hawkins left his home armed. Upon entering the building shortly before 2:20 p.m., he ordered everyone to the ground and aimed a gun at a female student, pulling the trigger, but the gun malfunctioned.
Hawkins then targeted a male student, prompting Principal Kirk Moore to rush out of his office and confront him directly.

Without hesitation, Moore tackled Hawkins in an attempt to disarm him. During the struggle on a bench in the foyer, Hawkins fired multiple shots, one of which struck Moore in the lower right leg. Another staff member quickly joined the fray, and together they managed to subdue Hawkins until law enforcement arrived. Fortunately, no students or other staff members were harmed, with only the principal sustaining an injury.
Investigation Reveals Disturbing Motives
Suspect's Obsession with Columbine
Authorities later discovered that Hawkins had a troubling fixation on the infamous Columbine High School shooting from 1999, where two students killed 12 peers and a teacher before taking their own lives. Hawkins expressed a desire to replicate that tragedy, intending to target students, staff, and ultimately himself. He specifically mentioned a dislike for Principal Moore, indicating that he planned to kill him.
Special agent Meric Mussett from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation noted in the arrest affidavit that Hawkins had meticulously planned the attack.
Legal Proceedings and Recovery
Charges and Recovery
Hawkins is currently detained at the Garvin County detention center with a bail set at $1 million. He faces multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, felonious firearm use, and bringing a weapon onto school property. His court appearance is scheduled for May 8. Meanwhile, Principal Moore received treatment for his leg injury and has reported that he is recovering well and eager to return to his duties at the school.
