Severe Weather Forecast for Assam and Northeast India

New Delhi, Aug 7: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning regarding persistent heavy rainfall in the Northeast region for the upcoming week. Assam is anticipated to experience isolated heavy showers daily until August 12, raising alarms about potential flooding and waterlogging in various areas of the state.

The latest weather bulletin from the IMD indicates that Assam and Meghalaya will likely see widespread rainfall on August 6-7 and again on August 12, with scattered showers expected from August 8 to 11. Additionally, isolated thunderstorms with lightning are forecasted for Assam and Meghalaya until August 10.

This weather prediction comes as the monsoon remains vigorous in the region, influenced by several weather systems.

Furthermore, the IMD has predicted isolated heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh on August 7-8 and again on August 11-12. States like Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are expected to receive widespread rainfall throughout August 6-12, with isolated heavy showers starting from August 7. Notably, very heavy rainfall is anticipated in these states on August 6, which could lead to localized flooding and disruptions.

Officials from the IMD have urged residents in at-risk areas to stay vigilant, as heavy rains may cause waterlogging in low-lying regions, localized landslides in hilly areas, and interruptions to transportation and daily life.

In light of the expected rainfall, the IMD has also provided crop-specific agricultural advisories for farmers in the region. In Assam, farmers are advised to keep drainage channels clear and ensure proper drainage in rice nurseries, jute, sugarcane, soybean, pigeon pea, sesame, and vegetable fields to avoid prolonged waterlogging that could harm crops.

In Meghalaya, farmers should remove excess water from rice nurseries and fields growing maize, cowpea, okra, and ginger. They are also encouraged to open drainage channels promptly and support banana plants and other crops that may be affected by strong winds and heavy rain.

For Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, the IMD recommends ensuring proper drainage in soybean, black gram, ginger, turmeric, cole crops, and vegetable fields. Farmers should also provide bamboo support to banana and other susceptible crops while preventing water accumulation in rice and groundnut fields.

This warning follows significant rainfall recorded in parts of the Northeast, including Assam and Mizoram, in the past 24 hours, with heavy rainfall reported in Assam and very heavy rainfall in Mizoram.

As the monsoon is expected to remain active in the coming days, authorities in Assam and other northeastern states are closely monitoring river levels and flood-prone areas, urging residents to stay informed through official weather updates.
