The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'Red Alert' for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts as of Saturday. According to the weather department, these areas are expected to experience torrential to extremely heavy rainfall from July 4 to July 6. Tragically, two individuals, including a student, have lost their lives in separate incidents related to the weather.

School Closures Amid Rain Warnings

With the heavy rain alert in effect, students and parents are eager to know whether schools will remain open on Monday, July 6. Due to the Red Alert, educational institutions in Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Palghar are closed on Saturday. The district administration has announced that all schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centers in Palghar will remain shut until July 6. Educational institutions within the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) will also be closed until July 5, with further decisions pending based on weather conditions.

Heavy Rainfall Recorded in Mumbai

The IMD has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai in its latest district-wise forecast, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the weekend, with some areas experiencing extremely heavy downpours. Despite the late arrival of the monsoon, Mumbai has been experiencing significant rainfall since the beginning of the week. By Saturday morning, over 100 mm of rain had fallen in various parts of the city within a 24-hour period.

Tragic Incidents Linked to Rainfall

The heavy monsoon rains have led to several emergency situations across the city. The municipal administration has responded to incidents involving fallen trees, electrical short circuits, and structural damage.

One of the most tragic incidents involved the death of an 11-year-old student when a tree fell on a school bus in Chembur. In another incident, a person was killed when a portion of a balcony slab collapsed in South Mumbai. Emergency response teams have been deployed to clear debris and restore normalcy in the affected areas. Additionally, overhead wires on the Harbour Line were damaged, disrupting public transport and causing inconvenience for thousands of commuters.
