Heavy Rainfall Expected in Mumbai as Monsoon Intensifies
Monsoon Conditions in Mumbai and Coastal Maharashtra
The city of Mumbai and the coastal regions of Maharashtra are bracing for a significant monsoon impact once again. Satellite images released on Friday morning reveal a massive and dense cloud cluster forming over the Arabian Sea, rapidly approaching the state's coastline. Meteorologists predict that this weather system could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to Mumbai and surrounding districts in the coming hours. Parts of South Mumbai have already begun experiencing intense rainfall since morning.
According to weather experts, the cloud system is expected to result in substantial rainfall in Mumbai and nearby areas shortly; heavy rain has already been reported in South Mumbai. Recent images from INSAT-3DR and global weather satellites show a large group of rain-bearing clouds over the eastern-central Arabian Sea. The upper surface of these clouds is notably cold, indicating deep convection and significant storm activity, which could lead to torrential downpours.
It appears that this weather system is drawing energy from the abundant moisture present in the Arabian Sea. Strong southwest monsoon winds are continuously transporting warm, moist air towards the Konkan coast, where it rises and transforms into dense cumulonimbus clouds.
This cloud formation extends from far off the Maharashtra coast to parts of Gujarat and central India, with several areas of intense convection within this large cloud mass. These sections are expected to move towards the ground during the day, potentially causing heavy rainfall, storms, and strong winds. This period is crucial as forecasters anticipated that the heaviest rainfall would commence on Friday.
However, the rapid organization of clouds over the Arabian Sea indicates that the monsoon has intensified earlier than expected, leading to increased rainfall activities since Thursday.
Continuous heavy rain has been reported in South Mumbai since morning, resulting in waterlogging in low-lying areas and slowing down traffic. As the main band of clouds approaches the coast, an increase in rainfall intensity is anticipated.
Meteorologists state that a strong offshore trough along the western coast, active monsoon flow, and favorable upper air conditions have created an ideal environment for persistent heavy rainfall in Mumbai and surrounding districts.
Precautions and Forecast
Residents have been advised to remain cautious, especially during peak travel times, as heavy rainfall can significantly reduce visibility and lead to waterlogged roads. If heavy rain persists for several hours, localized flooding in vulnerable areas cannot be ruled out.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is closely monitoring the changing cloud patterns using satellite data. With the continuous influx of moisture from the Arabian Sea, intermittent heavy rainfall is expected throughout the day in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and some coastal regions of Maharashtra.
Weather specialists indicate that this active phase signals a strengthening of the southwest monsoon along the western coast, with expectations of above-normal rainfall in the Konkan region and nearby areas over the next 24 to 48 hours.
