Severe Weather Conditions in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, August 3 - Kerala has experienced significant rainfall across various regions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reporting over 100 millimeters of rain at three weather stations in the state on Monday. Authorities have issued warnings regarding deteriorating conditions in the southern district of Pathanamthitta.

The office of Kerala's Tourism Minister P.C. Vishnunath indicated that the heavy rains in the Sabarimala area have led to alarming situations, with rising water levels expected in Ranni and nearby regions.

Minister Vishnunath is currently in Pathanamthitta, overseeing disaster management and relief efforts. He is assessing the situation in Kozhenchery alongside local MLA Abin Varghese, government officials, and other elected representatives. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to evacuate to safer locations due to the increased risk of flooding in vulnerable zones following overnight heavy rainfall.

In light of the ongoing heavy rains, several district collectors announced a closure of all educational institutions on Monday. Meanwhile, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has convened an online meeting with district collectors at 10 AM to review the rainfall situation across Kerala.

According to the IMD, rainfall data collected from 8:30 AM on August 2 to 5:30 AM on August 3 indicates that Venkurinji in Pathanamthitta recorded the highest rainfall at 104.5 millimeters, followed by Udumbannoor in Idukki with 103.0 millimeters and Cheruthoni in Idukki with 101.5 millimeters.

Other notable rainfall figures include 87.0 millimeters in Laha, Pathanamthitta, and 80.0 millimeters in Thayakkadussery, Alappuzha. Neriyamangalam in Ernakulam received 75.0 millimeters, while Ulanadu in Pathanamthitta recorded 74.5 millimeters. Mattancherry in Ernakulam saw 71.0 millimeters of rain.

Additionally, Ranni Chethakkal in Pathanamthitta experienced 65.5 millimeters, Vadavathur in Kottayam received 64.0 millimeters, Palluruthy in Ernakulam recorded 63.0 millimeters, and Munakkal in Thrissur saw 62.0 millimeters of rainfall. The IMD noted that all these locations recorded 60 millimeters or more during this period, attributed to the active southwest monsoon in the state.
