Severe Weather Hits Delhi-NCR

On Thursday, parts of Delhi-NCR experienced intense rainfall accompanied by severe storms, providing a much-needed respite from the oppressive heat that had persisted for several days. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for two days due to the cloud cover. Images from Noida showed strong winds, and the IMD forecasted that the city could see 'partly cloudy skies with occasional rain or thunderstorms' until June 6.

Monsoon Officially Begins in Kerala

The IMD announced the arrival of the monsoon on Thursday, marking its arrival on the Kerala coast three days later than initially predicted. This event signifies the formal start of the four-month rainy season in the country. On May 15, the IMD had projected that the southwest monsoon would enter Kerala by May 26, with a margin of error of ± four days.

Monsoon Progresses Across the Country

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon made its presence felt in Kerala on Thursday. Typically, the monsoon reaches Kerala around June 1, indicating the onset of the southwest monsoon season from June to September. The IMD noted that by June 4, 2026, the monsoon would have advanced to cover the remaining areas of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, parts of the west-central and east-central Arabian Sea, the entire Lakshadweep archipelago, Kerala and Mahe, as well as portions of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the remaining parts of the Comorin region, and several areas of the southeast Bay of Bengal and the southwest, west-central, east-central, and northeast Bay of Bengal.

Revised Rainfall Predictions

Previously, the weather department had anticipated that the monsoon would reach Kerala by May 26. However, last week, the department revised its seasonal rainfall forecast, indicating that this year's rainfall might be below normal.
