Heavy Pre-Monsoon Rains Expected Across India
Weather Changes with Pre-Monsoon Season
As the pre-monsoon season arrives in the country, significant changes in weather patterns have been observed. This shift has led to the onset of rainfall in several states, providing relief from the sweltering heat. Experts had predicted that 2025 would be a favorable year for rainfall, and with the beginning of 2026, forecasts indicated that this year would also witness substantial precipitation.
However, recent reports suggested that the El Niño phenomenon might influence this year's monsoon. In light of this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for various states on April 19, 20, and 21.
◙ Northwest India
The pre-monsoon phase will significantly impact northwest India. The weather department has warned of heavy rainfall in regions such as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh on April 19, 20, and 21. Additionally, gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kilometers per hour, dust storms, and thunderstorms are also expected.
◙ South India
For southern states, the weather department has issued alerts for heavy rainfall in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Puducherry, Yanam, Mahe, Karaikal, and Rayalaseema on the same dates. Winds may reach speeds of 30-40 kilometers per hour, accompanied by dust storms, thunderstorms, and potential hail in some areas.
◙ Eastern and Central India
Weather changes are also anticipated in eastern and central India. The IMD has warned of heavy and light rainfall in West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha on April 19, 20, and 21. Some districts may experience gusty winds of 30-50 kilometers per hour, along with dust storms and thunderstorms.
◙ Western India
Western India will also see weather changes. The IMD has issued alerts for heavy rainfall in Maharashtra and Marathwada on April 19, 20, and 21, with warnings of strong winds and thunderstorms in these regions.
◙ Northeastern India
The pre-monsoon effects will be felt in northeastern India as well. The IMD has forecasted heavy rainfall in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura on April 19, 20, and 21. Gusty winds of 30-50 kilometers per hour, dust storms, and thunderstorms are also expected in these areas.
