Heatwave Alert: IMD Issues Crucial Guidelines as Temperatures Soar Across India
IMD's Heatwave Guidelines Released
New Delhi: As temperatures climb in various parts of the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued comprehensive guidelines and advisories regarding heatwaves, officials announced on Saturday.
The recommendations include minimizing direct sunlight exposure, particularly during the hottest afternoon hours, ensuring proper hydration, opting for light and breathable attire, and refraining from intense outdoor activities during peak heat times.
The IMD has highlighted the need for extra caution for at-risk groups, including children, the elderly, and those with existing health issues. An official stated, "Raising awareness and taking preventive measures are essential to mitigate heat-related health risks such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke."
According to the IMD's latest report, maximum temperatures in several areas of northwest, central, and peninsular India are currently between 40 and 44 degrees Celsius, with Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan recording the highest at 44.5 degrees Celsius.
In many locations, temperatures have exceeded normal levels by five degrees Celsius or more, signaling a growing heat stress situation across the nation.
The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions are likely to emerge in isolated areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and central India in the upcoming days.
Coastal and eastern regions are expected to experience hot and humid weather, while parts of northern India may face warm nights.
The department also indicated that no significant changes in maximum temperatures are anticipated in northwest India until April 27, followed by a gradual decrease, while central and other regions may see a slow rise and subsequent drop in temperatures during the forecast period.
