Heated Debate in Rajya Sabha Over High-Speed Corridor Between Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram

A recent session in the Rajya Sabha saw Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and CPI(M) MP John Brittas engage in a heated debate regarding the high-speed corridor project between Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram. Brittas criticized the project's detailed report and questioned the government's commitment to development, while Vaishnaw accused the opposition of obstructing progress in Kerala. The discussion highlighted ongoing tensions in Kerala's political landscape, particularly concerning land acquisition and project execution. As both sides exchanged sharp remarks, the future of the high-speed rail project remains uncertain, raising questions about the state's infrastructure development.

Intense Exchange in Rajya Sabha

During the question hour in the Rajya Sabha on Friday, a heated exchange occurred between Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and CPI(M) MP John Brittas regarding the high-speed corridor connecting Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram. Brittas raised concerns about the detailed project report (DPR) for the corridor, suggesting that the minister excels in 'presentation and marketing'. In response, Vaishnaw accused the CPI(M) and Congress of forming an alliance that hinders development in Kerala.

Concerns Raised by CPI(M) MP

Brittas pointed out that the Rail Minister's strengths lie in performance and marketing, which is why he has been given an additional portfolio in Information and Broadcasting. He referenced seven surveys in a five-page response, including one announced in the 2018-19 budget. Despite the DPR being submitted, he questioned the ongoing discussions about the survey. He asked whether the railway should prepare the DPR or if E. Sreedharan should be granted the authority to do so, and whether the proposed project would be recognized as a high-speed corridor when Kerala was excluded from the budget announcement.

Minister's Response to Criticism

Vaishnaw dismissed Brittas's marketing comment as derogatory and labeled the LDF and UDF as an alliance under the name of the Congress Communist Party. He claimed that the leftist government in Kerala has stalled land acquisition for railway projects. The Rail Minister stated that the member made an insulting remark and mentioned that Dr. Sreedharan has proposed a railway line capable of speeds up to 180 km/h, suggesting an elevated line across North-South Kerala. He indicated that they have thoroughly examined this proposal and intend to invite Sreedharan for further discussions soon. Generally, the cost of elevated lines is around ₹300 crore per kilometer, and they have three options to consider: the K-Rail project proposed by the state government, surveys conducted by the railway, and the elevated line.

Critique of Kerala Government

Criticizing the Kerala government, Vaishnaw stated that the real issue lies in the alliance between Congress and leftist parties, which he referred to as the Congress Communist Party. He accused them of aiming to obstruct every project in Kerala, showing no intention of completing any initiatives. He noted that ₹1,900 crore has been allocated for land acquisition, yet they are reluctant to proceed. The Sabari line, which has been pending for a long time, only began land acquisition after significant pressure from the central government. He questioned whether this is the appropriate way to serve the people of Kerala.
