Haryana Lawyer Seeks Registration of Online Satirical Party with Election Commission

Lawyer's Initiative to Register Cockroach Party

A lawyer from Panipat, Haryana, has submitted an application to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to register the online satire group, Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), under his name, separate from its founder Abhijit Dipke based in the United States. Sudhir Jakhar, who claims to be the national coordinator of the party, filed the application under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act. The application features a cockroach logo associated with the Chief Justice and includes Jakhar's designation as a lawyer. Jakhar has indicated that the registered Chief Justice can utilize his social media handles.

This month saw the emergence of Chief Justice Jakhar amid controversy surrounding remarks made by Chief Justice Surya Kant about unemployed youth. Surya Kant had remarked that there are young individuals akin to cockroaches, who neither find employment nor have a place in professions. Some of them turn to media, social media, or become RTI activists, launching attacks on everyone. Just five days after the launch of Chief Justice Jakhar's X account, it was suspended in India. Jakhar has quickly become one of the fastest-growing online trends, reportedly surpassing the follower count of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Instagram. Thousands of users have registered through the online membership form.

Jakhar mentioned that the party reached out to Dipke, urging him to return to India for the registration process. However, Dipke, who is pursuing postgraduate studies at Boston University, declined the invitation. Jakhar stated that Dipke refused to transform the movement into a grassroots political party upon returning to India. Given the widespread anger among the youth and the extensive nature of the movement thus far, we felt it was crucial to take action ourselves to prevent any misuse of the name by others.
