जींद. In a remarkable move, a family from the village of Phulaya in the Narwana assembly constituency of Haryana has opted to accept only ₹1 as dowry for their son's marriage. This decision aims to combat the prevalent dowry system, which is considered a significant social evil. The family expressed their joy in finding an educated bride. Upon arriving at her in-laws' home, the bride remarked on her fortune to have in-laws who oppose dowry.

The family, which includes a retired tehsildar, chose to marry their son to a well-educated girl from a less affluent background, accepting just ₹1 as dowry. Locals in the area have praised this initiative, encouraging other families to consider dowry-free marriages for their sons. Shamsher Singh, the father of the groom, shared that he has always been against the dowry system. His family follows religious principles and has adhered to the teachings of great leaders by marrying their son to a girl from a poor family without any dowry.

He emphasized that while parents invest in their daughters' education, they often face the burden of providing a hefty dowry during marriage, which adds financial strain on the girl's family. He urged everyone to marry their sons without dowry and to commit to eradicating this social ill. The bride, Geetu, expressed her happiness in joining this family, stating that her parents were unable to provide dowry, yet this family welcomed her as their daughter-in-law without any demands. She encouraged all youth to take steps to eliminate the dowry system from society.
