Haryana to Honor CWG 2026 Athletes

The Haryana government is set to recognize its athletes from the Commonwealth Games 2026 during a ceremony in Panchkula on Friday. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will present awards to the medalists and Haryana representatives who were part of the Indian team in Glasgow, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office.

Among the 13 gold medals won by India at the CWG 2026, seven were secured by athletes from Haryana. Notable winners include Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Sachin Siwach, Sakshi Choudhary, Priya Ghanghas, Sharmila Dhankar, and Ankush Panghal, with six of these medals coming from boxing. Overall, Haryana athletes contributed to a total of 10 medals at the event.

India Finishes Fourth as Ahmedabad Secures 2030 Hosting Rights

The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded on August 2 after 11 days of competition, with Scotland officially handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which will host the centenary edition in 2030. Ahmedabad will be the venue, making India the second country after Australia to host the event multiple times, having previously done so in New Delhi in 2010.

During the handover ceremony, the flag and baton were presented to Indian representatives, including Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

India celebrated a successful campaign, finishing fourth in the medal standings with a total of 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze. Although this was fewer than the 61 medals won in Birmingham in 2022, it is important to note that many of the sports in which India excelled in Birmingham were not included in the Glasgow program. With a smaller team of 122 athletes compared to 210 four years ago, India achieved a better medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals. Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh was the only Indian to secure two medals.

With the handover complete, attention now turns to Ahmedabad, which will host the landmark centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030.
