Harbhajan Singh Challenges Punjab Government's Security Withdrawal in Court
Harbhajan Singh Takes Legal Action Against Security Withdrawal
Former Indian cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court in response to the state government's decision to revoke his security. He has filed a petition requesting the reinstatement of his protection, questioning the basis and reasons behind the sudden removal of his security detail.
Incident of Attack and 'Traitor' Graffiti
In his petition, Harbhajan Singh highlighted a serious incident where a mob attempted to attack outside his residence, leaving the word 'traitor' scrawled on his wall. He has urged the court to take stringent action against those responsible for this incident. Following his recent switch from the Aam Aadmi Party to the Bharatiya Janata Party, discussions regarding his security have intensified.
Court's Inquiry into Government's Decision
During the hearing, the High Court issued notices to both the Punjab and central governments, demanding explanations. The court inquired about the criteria used for the security review and the rationale behind its withdrawal. Additionally, it sought information on any actions taken regarding the graffiti incident. The court has instructed that Harbhajan Singh and his family's security be ensured until the next hearing.
Harbhajan Singh's Political Journey
Notably, Harbhajan Singh entered the Rajya Sabha in 2022 through the Aam Aadmi Party. However, on April 24, he departed from the party alongside Raghav Chadha and other members, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. This political shift has coincided with the ongoing controversy surrounding his security.
