Detection of H5N1 in Kannur District
Authorities have confirmed the presence of H5N1 avian influenza in the Edakkunnam area of Iritty, Kannur district, with evidence of infection found in crows.
Officials from the district administration reported that there have been no cases detected in domestic birds so far, indicating that there is currently no need to cull any birds.
In response to the H5N1 findings, District Collector Arun K. Vijayan has issued an alert for the region and instructed local authorities to take precautionary measures.
According to an official statement, the confirmation of the disease was made by the Deputy Director of the Kannur Regional Diagnostic Laboratory. However, it was emphasized that no cases have been reported in domestic birds to date.
The District Collector has directed the District Medical Officer and the Joint Director of the Local Self-Government Department to implement necessary actions to prevent the spread of the virus in Iritty municipality and surrounding areas.
The district administration clarified that the infection has only been identified in a single crow, thus no outbreak or surveillance zone has been declared, and there is no need for bird culling.
The statement also mentioned that if any dead birds are found, they will be buried at a sufficient depth using calcium carbonate, following safety protocols. Personnel involved in this disposal process are required to wear gloves, masks, and personal protective equipment.
