Inauguration of Rukminigaon Flyover

Guwahati, July 5: The much-anticipated Rukminigaon flyover in Guwahati is scheduled to be inaugurated on July 6 by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

This new flyover aims to alleviate the daily traffic congestion experienced by commuters on the vital route linking Dispur and Six Mile.

According to the Chief Minister, this flyover, along with another at Supermarket, will hold historical importance.

During a press briefing in Baksa on Saturday, Chief Minister Sarma announced that both flyovers will be named in honor of King Bhagadatta of Kamrup, designated as Bhagadatta I and Bhagadatta II.

He remarked, "King Bhagadatta, the son of Narakasura, was the inaugural king of ancient Kamrup. The Kalita community has long sought to honor him. We hope this will serve as a reminder of our rich cultural heritage while also addressing traffic issues."

The flyover spans approximately 650 meters and is anticipated to significantly ease congestion at some of the city’s busiest intersections, particularly in the Ganeshguri and Beltola areas, which are known for heavy traffic during peak hours.

Once operational, it is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce travel times, and enhance overall vehicle movement in this expanding urban center.

Constructed in a remarkable nine months, the project, which commenced in 2024, is celebrated as a symbol of swift infrastructure development under the current government.

However, the project has faced criticism from environmentalists and local residents who have raised concerns about the loss of greenery, as numerous mature trees were removed during construction.

Critics have highlighted the lack of clear compensatory afforestation strategies, warning of potential long-term effects on the urban ecology of the area.

Despite these issues, the new flyover represents a significant step towards modern urban mobility solutions in the city.

The inauguration ceremony is expected to draw senior government officials, local leaders, and numerous residents, marking another significant achievement in Guwahati’s rapid urban development.
