Election Preparations Intensify in Kamrup (Metro)

Guwahati, March 17: As the polling date of April 9 approaches, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration is ramping up efforts to ensure a seamless electoral process.

District Commissioner Swapnil Paul discussed the preparations, stating that various teams have been deployed throughout the district following the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

“With the enforcement of the MCC, we have established nine flying squad teams and nine static surveillance teams. These teams are actively monitoring the field to detect violations and ensure adherence to election regulations,” Paul explained.

He further noted that the district administration has formed all necessary teams as per the guidelines set by the Election Commission of India to facilitate the elections smoothly.

Paul highlighted new initiatives introduced by the Election Commission to enhance the electoral process, mentioning the PRO App.

“This election cycle, the Election Commission has rolled out several new initiatives. One significant addition is the PRO App, which allows voter turnout officers to update polling data in real-time. Previously, data collection required manual outreach to polling officials. This new system will enable quicker and more precise updates,” he stated.

The district administration confirmed that polling in Kamrup (Metro) will occur at 1,218 polling stations from 9 am to 5 pm on April 9.

Paul also shared important dates in the election timeline.

“The deadline for filing nominations is March 23, scrutiny will occur on March 24, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 26. Voting will take place on April 9, with vote counting scheduled for May 4. The Model Code of Conduct will remain effective until the counting concludes,” he added.

Income Tax Department Establishes 24/7 Control Room

In a related initiative to combat illicit financial activities during the elections, the Income Tax Department has set up a 24/7 control room in Guwahati to monitor suspicious financial transactions throughout the election period.

Located at Aayakar Bhawan in Christian Basti on GS Road, this control room will operate continuously as part of coordinated efforts to support the Election Commission of India in ensuring fair elections.

Officials indicated that the monitoring system will focus on tracking unaccounted cash, bullion, precious metals, and other high-value items that could potentially influence voters.

To promote public involvement, the department has established several channels for citizens to report any suspicious election-related financial activities.
