Guwahati Police Reports Significant Crime Reduction in 2025

The Guwahati City Police has reported a significant decline in crime rates for 2025, with notable improvements in chargesheet filing and conviction rates. The report highlights a drop in property crimes, including vehicle theft, and an increase in drug-related arrests. Cybercrime efforts have also intensified, with substantial recoveries made. Guwahati Police Highlights Crime Trends


Guwahati, Jan 2: The Guwahati City Police has unveiled a detailed report on crime and law enforcement for the year 2025, showcasing substantial improvements in various critical metrics compared to prior years.


The rate of chargesheet filings reached 68.34 percent in 2025, a remarkable increase from 19.13 percent in 2021. Additionally, the conviction rate saw a significant rise, hitting 28.05 percent this year, up from a mere 4 percent in 2021.


With the introduction of new criminal legislation, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Guwahati's conviction rate has soared to 86.84 percent, indicating quicker trials and enhanced investigative methods.


Joint Commissioner of Police Ankur Jain stated during a press conference at the Commissioner of Police (CP) office in Guwahati, “In 2021, our charge-sheet filing rate was 19.13 percent. This year, we have improved it by more than 50 percent. After the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the conviction rate has reached 86.84 percent.”


Property Crimes Decline

Regarding property crimes, the police reported 1,854 incidents in 2025, a decrease from 2,804 in 2024 and 3,752 in 2023.


Vehicle theft has notably decreased, with 1,118 cases recorded in 2024 dropping to 553 in 2025, thanks to preventive measures. The police successfully recovered 267 vehicles, achieving a recovery rate of 48.2 percent.


In mobile theft cases, Guwahati Police recovered 1,159 stolen phones and returned them to their rightful owners. A total of 203 arrests were made in connection with mobile thefts, alongside 123 snatching incidents that led to the apprehension of 163 suspects.


Drug-Related Offenses

Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the number of registered cases rose from 301 in 2023 to 406 in 2025, with 555 individuals, including drug traffickers and small-scale dealers, arrested this year.


Jain noted, “In 2023, we arrested 518 individuals under NDPS cases, while 529 arrests were made in 2024. The consistent increase in both case registrations and arrests reflects our intensified efforts against drug networks.”


Cybercrime Efforts

In 2023, the Panbazar Cyber Crime Police Station seized Rs 6.28 crore from cybercriminals and returned the funds to victims. In 2025, the police prosecuted 18 cases and conducted 1,784 investigations, while continuing to organize awareness programs on cybercrime.


Traffic Safety Improvements

On the topic of road safety, Guwahati experienced 1,026 road accidents in 2025, a reduction from 1,218 in 2024.


“Public cooperation has been commendable. On December 31, we did not witness any major traffic accidents, and I thank the people of Guwahati for their support,” the official remarked.


In 2025, the Guwahati Police imposed fines totaling Rs 50 crore for traffic violations, demonstrating a strengthened enforcement initiative. The city police reaffirmed their dedication to ensuring public safety and welfare.
