Guwahati Police Enforces Ban on Public Gatherings to Ease Traffic
Immediate Ban on Public Gatherings in Guwahati
Guwahati, June 6: In an effort to reduce significant traffic jams and facilitate smoother transit throughout the city, the Guwahati Police Commissionerate has announced an immediate prohibition on all rallies, processions, marathons, walkathons, and similar public events within the city limits.
This directive is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice.
The order was issued by Imdad Ali, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration), under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.

Officials have indicated that this decision was made in response to the frequent disruptions caused by such events, which have led to severe traffic congestion and hindered emergency response efforts.
“These events not only lead to significant crowding and congestion but also endanger public safety by obstructing emergency services,” stated the official order.
To tackle these issues, the police have stressed the importance of strict regulation of road usage.
The order clearly states that the ban on all processions in the city aims “to ensure an uninterrupted commute for the public.”
Any violations of this order will result in penalties under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Importantly, the ban allows for exceptions: individuals or groups impacted by the restrictions can submit a written request to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) to seek a modification or cancellation of the order.
This directive is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion in the city.
