Guwahati's Initiative to Beautify Public Spaces

Guwahati, August 1: In an effort to enhance the city's appearance and reclaim public areas ahead of Independence Day, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has initiated a citywide eviction campaign targeting unauthorized business operations on footpaths and under flyovers.

The operation commenced on Thursday, concentrating on Jalukbari and Ganeshguri, which are among the most crowded regions in the city.

Working alongside the city police, the GMC team dismantled approximately 15 to 20 illegal stalls, many of which had been operating for years without the necessary permits.

Particular attention was given to food stalls located beneath the Ganeshguri flyover, which officials noted were contributing to environmental and traffic issues.

“These stalls have become a significant concern,” remarked a GMC official during the operation.

“They not only encroach on public areas but also lead to considerable littering. We recently renovated the footpaths, yet the vendors persist in polluting the surroundings, disregarding the designated waste disposal bins. The situation has escalated to a point where it is impacting the city's image and cleanliness,” he added.

The official also responded to allegations of leniency or corruption among certain GMC staff members.

“There have been claims that we have an understanding with the vendors at Ganeshguri market, which is entirely untrue. Despite deploying personnel from the Municipal Corporation, vendors continue to set up their stalls again. However, with police support, we are now enforcing stricter measures,” he stated. “Any future attempts to re-establish shops in these no-vending zones will result in immediate consequences.”

This initiative by the GMC is part of a larger effort to improve the city's aesthetics and functionality in anticipation of Independence Day.

The corporation has pledged to carry out similar operations across various locations in Guwahati in the upcoming days to maintain clean, accessible, and safe public spaces for everyone.
