Guwahati Braces for Thunderstorms and Rain: IMD Forecast

Guwahati is preparing for a wet spell as the India Meteorological Department forecasts thunderstorms and lightning from June 11 to 13. With temperatures remaining stable and humidity levels rising, residents are advised to stay alert and take precautions against potential lightning strikes. The arrival of the southwest monsoon has been delayed this year compared to last, but widespread rainfall is expected across the Northeast. Conditions are predicted to improve after June 13, making it essential for locals to remain cautious during the stormy days ahead.

Guwahati, June 11: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a series of thunderstorms and lightning for Guwahati on June 11, 12, and 13, with conditions expected to improve starting June 14.

The IMD's latest weather report indicates that the city will experience a predominantly cloudy atmosphere, with occasional rain or thundershowers throughout the week.

Warnings for thunderstorms and lightning, highlighted in yellow on the IMD's forecast, are specifically applicable for the initial three days of this period.

Temperature forecasts suggest stability, with minimums expected to be around 26 degrees Celsius on June 11 and 12, slightly decreasing to 25 degrees on June 13 and 14, and further dropping to 24 degrees by June 16.

The maximum temperature is anticipated to hover around 33 degrees for most of the week, peaking at 34 degrees on June 15 before settling back to 33 degrees on June 16 and 17.

As the week progresses, humidity levels are projected to increase, starting at 80% for June 11 and 12, rising to 85% on June 13 and 14, and reaching 95% from June 15 to 17. Evening humidity will follow a similar upward trend.

This week's unpredictable weather aligns with the advancing southwest monsoon. The IMD reported on June 8 that the monsoon had already covered nearly half of the Northeast and was expected to extend into the remaining areas within three to four days.

The meteorological department also forecasted widespread rainfall across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from June 7 to 13, with thunderstorms, lightning, and isolated heavy rainfall likely during this timeframe.

However, officials from the IMD's Guwahati center noted that this year's monsoon onset has been relatively late compared to 2025, when it had reached most parts of the northeastern region by May 26.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant during thunderstorm alerts, avoid open spaces, and take necessary precautions against lightning strikes over the next three days.
