Gurdaspur Police Foil Grenade Attack Plot, Arrest Four Suspects
Major Breakthrough in Gurdaspur Grenade Attack Case
In a significant achievement, the Gurdaspur police, in collaboration with the Punjab Counter Intelligence (CI) wing, have apprehended four individuals linked to the grenade attack case in Gurdaspur. This operation led to the recovery of a Chinese-made P-86 hand grenade and a substantial cache of weapons, effectively averting another potential terrorist attack in the border state. The arrested suspects have been identified as Pradeep Kumar and Gurdit, both residents of Gurdaspur, along with Naveen Chaudhary and Kush from Talwara in Hoshiarpur. Authorities seized a Zigan pistol and a .32 bore pistol, along with live ammunition from their possession.
Details of the Attack and Arrests
During a press conference, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) for the Border Range, Sandeep Goyal, revealed the high-level conspiracy behind the attack that occurred on November 25 at the Gurdaspur city police station around 7:30 PM. The officer confirmed that the suspects were found with a P-86 hand grenade and two pistols. Initial investigations indicated that the grenade attack was orchestrated by gangster Shahzad Bhatti, allegedly sponsored by the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI, with assistance from his associate Zeeshan Akhtar and their American handler Amandeep Singh, also known as Aman Pannu.
Confrontation and Arrests
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Aditya provided further details regarding the arrests. Following technical and intelligence leads, police teams located suspects Naveen Chaudhary and Kush near Jagatpur village. When stopped at a checkpoint, the suspects opened fire on the police. In response, the police returned fire in self-defense, injuring both Naveen and Kush. They were promptly transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, where they are currently receiving care. Authorities recovered the remaining P-86 hand grenade and two pistols from the scene, which was quickly secured, and a bomb disposal team was called in to sanitize the area and defuse any explosives.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
Two separate cases have been registered: FIR number 289 at the Gurdaspur city police station under sections 109, 324(4), and 111 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act; and FIR number 130 at the Old Shalla police station under sections 109 and 111 of the IPC, section 25 of the Arms Act, and sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.
