Jorhat, Apr 13: Late Sunday night, unidentified individuals reportedly fired shots at the home of Paresh Baruah, the commander-in-chief of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), located in Dibrugarh district, Upper Assam. This incident has sparked renewed worries about security in the area.

Family members indicated that the shooting took place shortly after midnight at Baruah's residence in Jeraigaon, with at least two gunshots being heard, although no injuries were reported.

Bimal Baruah, Paresh's brother, mentioned that the event was not recorded by their CCTV system. “Nothing was captured on the cameras,” he stated.

Despite the presence of security personnel from Assam Police, the attackers managed to execute the shooting, raising concerns from the family about how such a security lapse could happen.

A security guard at the residence, Samsam Sangwal, noted that the shooter was not visible and that the shots seemed to originate from a distance.

“We couldn’t identify who fired the shots. The gunfire appeared to come from afar. We rushed outside upon hearing the noise, but found no one. Two shots were fired, yet we did not recover any bullet casings,” he explained.

Sangwal further mentioned that four security personnel, including one personal security officer (PSO), are assigned to the residence in shifts.

He speculated that the attackers might have collected the cartridges after firing. “I suspect the gun was discharged from a distance. We couldn’t locate any cartridges; they may have taken them with them,” he added.

This incident follows closely on the heels of ULFA(I)’s self-proclaimed major general Arunoday Dohotia, also known as Bijit Baruah, returning home after departing from militant camps in Myanmar just two days prior.

Dohotia had reportedly surrendered several months ago. The timing of the shooting has heightened concerns among family members regarding the effectiveness of security measures in place.

Sources indicate that similar shooting incidents targeting the residence occurred in 2000 and 2001. Authorities have yet to release an official statement, and an investigation is anticipated.
