Gukesh's Spiritual Visit to Tirumala

On Friday, Indian chess grandmaster and current World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju made a pilgrimage to the Tirumala temple in Andhra Pradesh. He offered prayers to Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy as he gears up for his title defense at the FIDE World Chess Championship 2026. The 20-year-old sought divine blessings at this esteemed shrine located in the Tirupati district, preparing for a tough match against Uzbekistan's Javokhir Sindarov.

World Championship Title Defense Scheduled

Gukesh is set to defend his championship title in a classical chess match consisting of 14 games against Sindarov, taking place from November 24 to December 12, 2026. This highly anticipated event will be hosted at the Fondation Martin Bodmer in Cologny, Geneva, Switzerland. The young prodigy aims to maintain the title he secured in December 2024 after defeating China's Ding Liren in Singapore.

Remarkable Achievements in Chess

At just 18 years, six months, and 24 days, Gukesh made history as the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion ever. His victory was a landmark achievement for Indian chess, making him only the second Indian, after Viswanathan Anand, to claim the undisputed world championship. Gukesh earned his Grandmaster title in January 2019 at the age of 12 years, seven months, and 17 days, marking him as one of the youngest to reach this level.

He has continued to excel on the global stage, becoming the youngest player to surpass the 2750 rating threshold and was recognized as India's top-rated player in September 2023, overtaking five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand. The Chennai-born grandmaster has also significantly contributed to India's success in the Chess Olympiads, securing both individual and team gold medals.
