Gujarat Titans Face Heavy Defeat Against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026

In a disappointing match for Gujarat Titans, they suffered a 99-run defeat against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026. Batting coach Matthew Hayden criticized the team's performance, highlighting issues in both batting and bowling. Despite a stellar century from MI's Tilak Varma, GT struggled to respond, collapsing to 100 all out. Hayden emphasized the need for improvement as the team now sits in sixth place in the standings. Read on for a detailed analysis of the match and Hayden's insights.

Gujarat Titans' Disappointing Performance

In a significant setback, Gujarat Titans (GT) experienced a crushing 99-run loss to Mumbai Indians (MI) during match 30 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Following the match, batting coach Matthew Hayden described the team's performance as 'terrible'.

Hayden's Post-Match Remarks

During the post-match press conference, Hayden expressed his disappointment, stating, "As a batting coach, I expect our margins to be a lot smaller than 100 runs. That scorecard is unacceptable for our batting unit. We have talented players who need to adopt a better mindset and seize their opportunities. We must improve significantly from today's performance, which was quite poor."

Mumbai's Strong Batting Display

Batting first, MI set a formidable target of 199/5, largely thanks to Tilak Varma's remarkable maiden IPL century, scoring an unbeaten 101 off just 45 deliveries. Despite losing early wickets, MI made a strong recovery in the final overs, amassing 73 runs in the last four overs, primarily due to Varma's aggressive hitting. Prasidh Krishna (54/1) and Ashok Sharma (38/0) struggled, conceding runs at an alarming rate of over 12 runs per over.

Concerns Over Death Bowling

Hayden criticized the bowling performance in the final overs, calling it a 'horror story'. He remarked, "Allowing 73 runs in the last four overs is unacceptable for world-class players. Our bowling lineup must reflect on this performance, as key players like Prasidh have repeatedly conceded significant runs in their overs due to execution issues."

Rabada's Standout Performance

Kagiso Rabada emerged as one of GT's top performers, taking three wickets for 33 runs in his four overs. Hayden commended Rabada, stating, "He had an exceptional day and is performing well in the tournament. His pace consistently exceeds 140 km/h, and he is hitting the right areas, which is crucial for our success."

Gujarat's Top-Order Collapse

In response, Gujarat Titans struggled significantly, suffering a top-order collapse that saw them lose Sai Sudharsan for a golden duck and fall to 45/3 within six overs. The innings deteriorated further as Ashwani Kumar (4/24), Mitchell Santner (2/16), and AM Ghazanfar (2/17) dismantled the batting lineup, ultimately bowling Gujarat out for just 100 runs.

Middle Order Exposed

Hayden also pointed out the vulnerabilities in GT's middle order, emphasizing the need for top-order batsmen to face more deliveries. He concluded, "The middle order was undoubtedly exposed today. When they come in during the powerplay, it indicates deep trouble. You can't win from that position, especially in a chase, but you can certainly lose it, and we lost it in the power play."

Current Standings

Following this match, Shubman Gill's Gujarat Titans have dropped to sixth place in the standings, with three victories and three defeats in their six matches.
