Gujarat Prepares for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad

Gujarat is gearing up to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, with Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi announcing that preparations are well underway. The official handover from the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games has taken place, marking a significant milestone for India, which will become the second country to host the event multiple times. India finished fourth in the Glasgow medal tally, showcasing a strong performance despite a smaller team. As the focus shifts to Ahmedabad, plans are being made to encourage local athletes to participate in the upcoming games.

Gujarat Readies for the 2030 Commonwealth Games

Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister, Harsh Sanghavi, expressed his congratulations to the young athletes from Gujarat and across the nation, stating that 'Team Gujarat' is fully equipped to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. He emphasized that preparations are advancing smoothly, guided by Commonwealth Sport, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the Sports Department, and the Sports Authority of India (SAI), according to a press release.

He elaborated that following the Closing Ceremony and Flag Exchange Ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, the Glasgow delegation, along with Gujarat's athletes and para-athletes, presented the Commonwealth Flag to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel during a Cabinet meeting today.

Discussing the State Government's initiatives to promote sports, he mentioned that special plans and programs are being developed to encourage local athletes throughout Gujarat to engage in and benefit from the district-level sports complexes established statewide.

Official Handover from Glasgow 2026

The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded on August 2 after 11 days of competition, with Scotland officially handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, the host of the landmark centenary edition in 2030, during a spectacular closing ceremony. Ahmedabad will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, making India the second country after Australia to host this multi-sport event more than once, having previously held the Games in New Delhi in 2010.

During the official handover ceremony, the Commonwealth Games flag and baton were presented to India's representatives, including Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, IOA president PT Usha, and Gujarat's Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

India's Performance at Glasgow

India had much to celebrate in terms of sports, finishing fourth in the medals tally with a total of 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze, marking a successful campaign. Although this total was lower than the 61 medals achieved in Birmingham in 2022, the context is significant, as 30 of those medals were in sports that were not included in the Glasgow program.

Despite sending only 122 athletes compared to 210 four years prior, India maintained its fourth-place finish and achieved a better medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals.

Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh stood out as the only Indian athlete to secure two medals.

With the ceremonial handover concluded, attention now turns to Ahmedabad, which is set to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030.
