Historic Ruling by Gujarat High Court

On Tuesday, the Gujarat High Court delivered a landmark judgment, affirming the lower court's decision regarding the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bombings. The court upheld the death sentences for all 38 convicted individuals involved in this heinous terrorist attack. Additionally, the life sentences for 11 other terrorists found guilty in the case will also remain in effect. This ruling sends a strong message of 'zero tolerance' against terrorism.

In the serial blast case, the Gujarat High Court ordered compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of the 56 victims who lost their lives and ₹1 lakh for over 200 injured individuals.

Overview of the 2008 Ahmedabad Serial Bombings

On July 26, 2008, Ahmedabad experienced a wave of terror as 21 bomb blasts occurred at 20 different locations within a span of approximately 70 minutes, instilling fear throughout the city. The attacks resulted in the deaths of 56 people and left over 200 others injured.

The Islamic terrorist organization HuJI claimed responsibility for these attacks. Meanwhile, another investigation is underway regarding the blast at Delhi's Red Fort, where the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has submitted forensic reports related to the body parts of the victims.

Ongoing Investigations and Developments

The court has scheduled a hearing to review the forensic report. According to the NIA, a powerful VBIED (vehicle-borne improvised explosive device) explosion resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals and caused significant injuries, along with extensive damage to nearby properties.

The NIA presented nine accused individuals before Special Judge Pritam Dutt, who extended their judicial custody until the next hearing. The case is set for a hearing on July 13. The NIA has already filed a charge sheet against ten accused, including Shaheen Saeed. The supplementary charge sheet against Zameer Ahmed Ahangar and Tufail Ahmed Bhat is still pending consideration in the NIA court in Patiala. The agency has also filed a supplementary charge sheet in the November 2025 Delhi blast case against Zameer, Tufail, and another absconding accused. Zameer and Tufail were arrested in February 2026, and the agency has previously submitted the main charge sheet in this matter, alleging that they were gathering weapons and ammunition.

Connections to Other Terrorist Activities

Zameer received a rifle, a pistol, and live ammunition from Umar, Irfan, and Adil, who are linked to 'Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind.' This case is associated with the car bomb explosion that occurred near the Red Fort in November 2025.
