Ahmedabad, Jul 7: The Gujarat High Court has upheld a special court's decision to impose death sentences on 38 members of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) and life sentences for 11 others involved in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts that resulted in 56 fatalities.
A division bench comprising Justices A Y Kogje and Samir Dave dismissed all appeals against the lower court's ruling, thereby affirming the sentences for the convicted individuals.
Additionally, the court mandated the state government to provide compensation of ₹10 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹5 lakh to those who sustained serious injuries.
Among the convicted were Safdar Nagori, a former leader of the now-banned Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), along with associates from various states including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh.
Special public prosecutor Amit Patel noted that the government presented comprehensive evidence against the defendants during the trial.
The High Court conducted an extensive review of the case over a period exceeding 18 months, with daily hearings commencing in February of this year.
The special court's ruling in February 2022 was significant as it marked the first instance of such a large number of death sentences being issued simultaneously by any court.
On July 26, 2008, a series of 21 bomb explosions occurred across various locations in Ahmedabad within a 70-minute timeframe, resulting in 56 deaths and injuring over 200 individuals.
Notably, some blasts targeted hospitals as victims were being transported for medical care, representing a disturbing first in such attacks.
A total of 78 individuals faced trial in the special court, with 49 being convicted in February 2022.
The trial consolidated 35 separate police cases, including 20 FIRs related to the 21 blasts in Ahmedabad and 15 in Surat, where bombs were planted but failed to detonate.
In February 2022, the special court sentenced 38 IM members to death and 11 others to life imprisonment.
All convicted individuals appealed the lower court's decision in the High Court, while the state government sought confirmation of the sentences.
This case stands out as the first occasion where such a significant number of convicts received death sentences from a court simultaneously.
