Governor Advocates for Sports Participation in Education at National Workshop

Importance of Sports in Education

On Saturday, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, the Governor of Tamil Nadu and Keralam, emphasized that sports should be viewed as a fundamental component of education rather than just an extracurricular activity. He encouraged all students to engage in sports.

The Governor made these remarks during the inauguration of a national workshop titled 'NEP 2020 – Redefining Sports and Physical Education in Higher Education' at National College (Autonomous) in Karumandapam, Tiruchirappalli. The event featured Rtn. AKS Er Murugananandam M (MMM), the Vice President of Rotary International for 2026-27 and President of the Physical Education Foundation of India (PEFI), Tamil Nadu Chapter, as the Guest of Honour. The workshop attracted academicians, physical education specialists, sports professionals, and representatives from various higher education institutions.

Encouraging Participation Beyond Winning

Governor Arlekar welcomed the initiative, noting that educational institutions often focus on academic seminars. He praised the workshop for emphasizing the significance of physical education and sports in higher education. He highlighted that participation in sports should not solely revolve around winning medals.

"Winning medals is secondary; every student should engage in sports," he stated, as reported by the Governor's office. He pointed out the increasing reliance on mobile devices and laptops, asserting that education should extend beyond classroom walls. "Sports is not merely an extracurricular activity; it is a vital aspect of our education," he urged, calling on parents and educational institutions to promote regular outdoor activities for children.

Harnessing the Energy of Gen-Z

The Governor noted that the sports industry is evolving with technological advancements, mentioning the adoption of rubber mats in Kabaddi instead of traditional mud grounds.

Addressing the talents of Gen-Z, he remarked that while they possess significant potential, their energy must be directed appropriately. "Gen-Z youngsters have immense talent, but their energy should not be misused. Parents and educational institutions must foster an environment that guides them positively," he emphasized.

Focus of the NEP 2020 Workshop

The workshop aims to explore the role of sports and physical education in the comprehensive development of students and how to incorporate these elements into higher education in line with NEP 2020.

Governor Arlekar commended the organizers for hosting the workshop and pledged support from Lok Bhavan.

Upon his arrival at the National College, he received a ceremonial welcome from the National Cadet Corps (NCC), where students performed a parade salute.
