Government's Housing Initiative: Progress and Future Plans
Significant Progress in Housing Scheme
New Delhi, Jan 1: The government announced on Thursday that out of the total target of 4.14 crore houses designated for states and Union Territories, 3.86 crore have been sanctioned, with 2.92 crore completed as of December 9, 2025.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) stands as a key initiative aimed at fulfilling the 'Housing for All' vision by providing 4.95 crore pucca houses equipped with essential amenities. This is to be achieved through collaboration with other schemes, targeting all households without shelter and those residing in kutcha or dilapidated homes in rural regions by 2029.
Initially, the scheme aimed to assist in the construction of 2.95 crore houses by March 2024.
On August 9, 2024, the Union Cabinet approved an extension of the scheme to facilitate the construction of an additional 2 crore rural houses from FY 2024-25 to FY 2028-29, addressing the growing housing needs due to an increase in rural families, as stated by the Ministry of Rural Development.
Additionally, the PM-JANMAN scheme was sanctioned by the Union Cabinet to ensure that Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) families and communities receive essential facilities. Housing support under this initiative is integrated with PMAY-G.
As of December 9, 2025, a total of 4,71,486 houses have been sanctioned, with 2,42,811 completed across various states and UTs. From January 1, 2025, to the present, 1,24,204 houses have been sanctioned and 1,71,719 completed.
Furthermore, the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), launched in June 2011, aims to alleviate poverty by enabling poor households to access sustainable self-employment and skilled wage opportunities.
The Lakhpati Didi initiative under this program seeks to empower women towards financial independence, with a target of creating 3 crore Lakhpati Didis (women earning Rs 1 lakh or more annually) by supporting women in scaling their businesses and contributing to sustainable rural development.
To date, over 2 crore women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have achieved the status of Lakhpati Didis, according to the ministry.
Notably, the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana has significantly enhanced rural connectivity, with the completion of over 16,000 km of roads and more than 900 bridges, the ministry reported.
