Government Proposes Significant Expansion of Lok Sabha Seats

The central government has proposed a significant increase in Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850, with 815 seats reserved for states and 35 for Union Territories. This proposal, shared with MPs, aims to reshape parliamentary representation ahead of the 2029 elections. However, the opposition is raising concerns about the use of 2011 census data for delimitation, advocating for updates based on the 2021 census. A strategic meeting among opposition leaders is set to address these issues, as they prepare to challenge the government's intentions regarding women's reservation and the timing of the proposed amendments.

Major Proposal for Lok Sabha Expansion

The central government has put forth a substantial proposal to expand the Lok Sabha, increasing the total number of seats from 543 to 850. A draft of the bill has been shared with the Members of Parliament. According to the proposal, out of the 850 seats, 815 will be allocated for states, while 35 will be reserved for Union Territories. Prior to the potential constitutional amendment process, the government has engaged with MPs regarding the bill draft. This initiative is expected to bring significant changes to parliamentary representation, set to take effect from the 2029 general elections.

Parliamentary Budget Session Extended

The budget session of Parliament has been extended, during which a special three-day session will be held. Discussions and potential passage of proposed constitutional amendments related to the increase in parliamentary seats are anticipated during this session. Once the constitution is amended, the Lok Sabha will comprise 850 members, a notable increase from its current strength of 543.

Opposition Voices Concerns

The opposition is preparing to challenge the government's delimitation efforts, particularly regarding the use of data from the 2011 census. Several parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), RJD, and DMK, argue that the delimitation should be based on updated figures from the 2021 census. Sources indicate that many parties within the India bloc may also seek clarification on the long-standing demand for a "quota within a quota" for women from backward classes. A strategic meeting of opposition leaders, including those from the AAP, is scheduled at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi, with leaders from TMC and DMK likely to attend.

Concerns Over Government's Intentions

Derek O'Brien, a member of the Trinamool Congress, has raised questions about the government's intentions, suggesting that the proposed amendments focus more on delimitation rather than implementing women's reservation. He inquired about the whereabouts of the bill's copy, noting that discussions on constitutional amendment bills are set for April 16. He also questioned the timing of the session, called just weeks before state elections. O'Brien emphasized that the BJP would require opposition support to pass the constitutional amendments, which necessitate a two-thirds majority in Parliament. The opposition parties are relying on this need to advance their demands and seek greater clarity from the government.
