Government Promotes PNG Connections Amid LPG Crisis in Israel-Iran Conflict
LPG Crisis and PNG Initiative
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran has led to a significant LPG shortage in the country over the past five weeks. In response, the government is actively promoting piped natural gas (PNG) connections to reduce reliance on LPG. Long queues for LPG cylinder deliveries have prompted this initiative, with approximately eight lakh new PNG connections established in the last month.
Authorities and gas companies are encouraging citizens to switch from cylinders to piped gas, which is expected to gradually decrease dependence on LPG and alleviate supply pressures. An official noted that the new PNG connections include both domestic and commercial users, with about half already activated and the remainder in progress.
Monthly LPG Supply Figures
The official reported that the supply of around 50 lakh LPG cylinders is being maintained each month, adequately meeting domestic demand and covering 80% of commercial needs. There is no cause for concern regarding gas shortages, as government advisories assure that sufficient LPG stock is available, urging citizens to avoid panic buying.
Over 16,000 LPG Connections Surrendered
In line with the government's appeal, many individuals who have received PNG connections have surrendered their LPG connections, totaling over 16,000 thus far. This has helped reduce pressure on the system. Those wishing to surrender their connections can submit details through a government portal, which also features a 'Hall of Fame' to honor customers who voluntarily relinquish their connections.
No Supply Shortages
Despite concerns about supply disruptions due to tensions in West Asia, officials confirmed that the country has ample stocks of crude oil, petroleum products, and cooking gas. Regular refills are being managed effectively, with supplies being coordinated and imports being made where necessary.
Encouragement for Induction and Electric Cookers
The government is urging citizens to consider using induction cookers or electric stoves to reduce gas consumption. Additionally, online cylinder bookings have surged to 95%, and authentication code-based deliveries have increased from 53% in February to 90% now.
Special Arrangements for Migrants
For migrant workers, students, or daily wage laborers without regular LPG connections, oil companies have begun selling 5 kg portable cylinders. Since March 23, 6.6 lakh of these small cylinders have been sold, requiring no address proof for purchase.
