New Legislative Measures Against Exam Malpractices

In a significant move to uphold the integrity and transparency of public and competitive examinations, the central government is set to introduce a stringent bill. This legislation aims to curb paper leaks and the use of unfair means during exams. On Monday, the government plans to present the 'Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024' amendment in the Lok Sabha, which has already been included in the agenda for the session.

According to the distributed copy of the bill, individuals found guilty of leaking exam papers or employing unfair methods could face imprisonment ranging from a minimum of five years to a maximum of ten years, along with fines up to ₹50 lakh. The bill also proposes a minimum of seven years of imprisonment and fines up to ₹10 crore for organized crimes related to exam malpractices.

Under the proposed amendments, all investigations must be completed within two months. The bill also suggests that states and union territories establish fast-track courts to ensure that trial proceedings are concluded within three months of filing the charges.

The introduction of this bill follows protests organized by the Cockroach Public Party at Jantar Mantar against the NEET paper leak, which led to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also announced the formation of a high-powered committee to reform the examination system.
